Publishing of a translation of the anthology "Form and Function" from Horatio Greenough.
Even well informed art historians could be embarrased by this question. In Germany he is completely unknown. Greenough was labeled as the "the first American sculptor" - he is the first artist of this field born in the United States.
For history of arts his sculptures are not thaaaat important as his theoretical writings about architecture. About 1850 - decades before Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier - he was the very first writer introducing the relation between form and function in architecture. His articles written in the last two years of his life are the first theories in the discourse of functionalism.
"Form and Function" was solely published in English and is completely out of stock. With this translation into German and an extended appendix with data of his life and work, comments to each article and also some attached images these sophisticated articles shall be opened to the German public.
