The project - On the Road to Al Jolson:
Since 2006 we have been working on our feature documentary on Al Jolson. So far, we have traveled to England, the USA and Lithuania for several times. We conducted interviews with former colleagues, fans, scholars, and family members.
Who we are:
Jens Reinke and I, Andrea Oberheiden, are students of literature and media studies in Kiel. So far, we have realized our film work besides our study work (graduation in 2013). Both of us are incredibly fascinated by Al Jolson's career and personality. Since 2006 we passionately have been working on realizing our documentary. In recent years, we have been able to acquire an international community that is following our progress and helps us to promote our work. But our films (short and research films) were shown at local film festivals and movie theaters. You can find further information about our biographies on www.aj-images.com.
Supporting our project:
So far we have been able to finance our project from private sources (own resources and donations) with 25,000€. Approximately 10% of the film work is left (interviews). To realize that, we have planned final trips to the USA, Malta, and Israel. We already found a sponsor for the remaining flight tickets. 10% of the remaining sum of 5,000€ will be used for that. The remaining 90% of that sum will be used for the post-production (software, archive material etc.). Those who support us will help us to complete our work and to realize our documentary.

Ich bin Dokumentarfilmerin aus Kiel, außerdem Magisterstudentin der Literatur- und Medienwissenschaften (kurz vor dem Abschluss). // I am a documentary filmmaker from Kiel, Germany. I am also a graduate student of literature and media studies.
Was meine Interessen und Aktivitäten betrifft, habe ich sozusagen mit der Literatur angefangen (Literaturwissenschaft) und bin dann über das Theater (als Konsumentin und Regieassistentin) zum Film (Medienwissenschaft, Statistenrollen, dann Regie) gekommen. In den Jahren zwischen 2003 und 2005 habe ich an diversen Kongressen und Workshops in den Bereichen Literatur, Theater und Film teilgenommen. Seit 2006 arbeite ich als Regisseurin und Cutterin an unserem (www.aj-images.com) Hauptprojekt, das sich mit dem jüdisch-amerikanischen Entertainer Al Jolson (1886-1950) beschäftigt. Im Jahre 2010 ist dann ein zweites Projekt hinzugekommen, das sich mit der Entstehungsgeschichte der Vilnius Jewish Public Library in Litauen beschäftigt. // I came to filmmaking from dealing with literature and live theater. I study German literature, I worked as an assistant stage director, and I functioned as an extra in a few international TV and film productions. Between 2003 and 2005 I attended various congresses and workshops in the fields of literature, live theater, and film. Since 2006 I have been working as director and editor on our main film project which deals with the "world's greatest entertainer", Al Jolson (1886-1950). We added a second big project which focuses on the founding of the Vilnius Jewish Public Library in Lithuania.
Ich bin ehrenamtlich tätig für die International Al Jolson Society (Sitz in Oceanside, New York), für die ich regelmäßig mediale Tätigkeiten übernehme (Anfertigung von Filmmaterial). Außerdem habe ich für die Vilnius Jewish Public Library Materialspenden aus Deutschland, Österreich, den USA und England organisiert sowie Promovideos gedreht. // I am a member of the Int'l. Al Jolson Society and created videos of their conventions and meetings. In addition to that, I did voluntary work for the Vilnius Jewish Public Library by organizing book and film donations from Germany, Austria, the USA, and England as well as creating promotional video footage.
Über unsere bisherige Kurz- und Langfilmarbeit im Dokumentarbereich habe ich bisher in den USA und England Vorträge gehalten. Unsere Trailer, Kurzfilme sowie Filmvorschauen (wir geben regelmäßig Videoupdates auf diversen Veranstaltungen) sind bisher in England, den USA, Malta und Australien gelaufen. Unseren Kurzfilm "Ein Blick auf Al Jolson" durften wir 2007 in der Live-Talkshow "The New Yorkers" in New York präsentieren. Zwei unserer Filme (ein Lang- und ein Kurzfilm) haben an lokalen Filmwettbewerben den jeweils 1. Preis gewonnen. Unser Film "Al Jolson und The Jazz Singer" lief auf den Nordischen Filmtagen in Lübeck im Jahr 2008. Nun arbeiten wir am Abschluss unseres abendfüllenden Dokumentarfilms "Auf den Spuren von Al Jolson", den wir 2015 nach 9-jähriger Arbeit fertigstellen wollen. // I have given presentations on our short and feature film projects in the USA and England. Our trailers, short films and work updates (promo material) have been shown in England, the USA, Malta, and Australia. We were able to promote our short film "A Look at Al Jolson" on the TV live talk show "The New Yorkers" in New York in 2007. Two of our film (one short film and one feature research film) won the first prize at local film festivals here in Germany. Our research film "Al Jolson and The Jazz Singer" was shown at the Nordic Filmdays in Lübeck in 2008. We are curently working on the completion of our feature documentary "On the Road to Al Jolson" which we plan to complete in 2015 - after 9 years of work.
